The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl

Gift tip! Shop for memoirs and audio books this year.

When it comes to holiday gifting, you can’t beat a good book. I have taken a recent liking to memoirs, and these days, nearly every celebrity of any sort has one out, so there’s something for everyone on your shopping list.

I gave my hubby The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl, and after finding out that Dave himself narrates the audio version, I immediately dove in, listening with my 16-year-old son during car trips this fall. It’s so much fun to hear Dave talk at great length about his hometown of Springfield, Virginia (which is also my husband’s hometown).

Dave talks about teaching himself to play the drums on his bed pillows as a kid (fun fact, Dave can’t read music!) and learning to mix his own music with two cassette decks when he was thirteen. He goes on to chronicle coming up in the music world, first in the DC punk rock scene, then hitting the road to tour with Scream at eighteen, then as drummer for the iconic grunge band Nirvana, and finally going out on his own after the death of Kurt Cobain.

His chapters about becoming a father and his devotion to his family are heart-warming and show his teddy bear side, one that Dave’s fans already know well. But you don’t have to be a fan or even know who Dave Grohl is to enjoy this book, although being a music fan is helpful. It’s the perfect gift for the book and music lovers on your list!
