When local authors Gigi Amateau and Meg Medina went looking for a way to share their love of great books, they found Girls of Summer.

The list of eighteen titles lives online at a blog where book lovers can share feedback, read weekly interviews with the authors, and register for book giveaways throughout the summer.  The blog, will be live on June 10. GIRLS OF SUMMER | This is not your school’s summer reading list

The literacy project was initiated by the authors to inspire kids to read over the summer, when many schools have required reading that students don’t always embrace.  “After all, what would summer be without great books and great friends to share them with?” asks Gigi, who with Meg has curated the Girls of Summer list for three years.

All the books, which include picture books, middle-grade, and young adult titles, were chosen because the girl in the story is unforgettable. “There’s something about her voice or her situation that makes her take the reins and that makes readers want to cheer her on,” says Gigi.

You can join the conversation about this year’s books with Meg and Gigi, as well as meet authors Jeri Watts and Kristen Paige Madonia at the Girls of Summer mid-month launch party in downtown Richmond.  That evening, all of the books will be available for purchase from local bookseller bbgb tales for kids and for check-out from Richmond Public Library.

Girls of Summer Launch Party

Tuesday, June 18, 7:00 p.m.
Library Park (Richmond Public Library)

Bring a blanket or chair and join Meg and Gigi, plus two guest authors featured on the Girls of Summer list, to talk about great books.  Enjoy free ice cream and refreshments with the family, plus register to win books and other door prizes.
