James River Cellars Winery blends the best of both worlds, urban convenience and country charm. Just minutes from major highways, it’s the perfect place to pause your day, unpack a picnic on the beautifully landscaped patio, or sip wine while soaking in views from the terrace. The winery’s story began with a bit of “spice.” Founder Ray Lazarchic, in search of the perfect Virginia Gewürztraminer (Gewürz means “spicy”), decided to grow his own. On 20 acres of farmland in Montpelier, Virginia, he planted what would become one of the state’s most distinctive vineyards. Since opening its doors in 2001, James River Cellars has been proudly family-run, now helmed by Ray’s daughter, Mitzi, and her husband, James. Today, their award-winning Gewürztraminer is a must-try, and they remain one of the few Virginia wineries to grow this celebrated grape. But the fun doesn’t stop with the wine. All year long, the winery buzzes with events, from live music at the “Fridays at the Pavilion” concert series, to delicious food and wine pairings, to hands-on workshops like yoga on the lawn, fairy garden building, and even chunky blanket making.
