Rowan’s newly-opened location in Short Pump Town Center brings ear piercing to a whole new level with piercings performed by licensed nurses. Here’s everything you need to know about the experience.

Rowan – the medical authority on ear piercing – just opened in Short Pump Town Center and shared all the information you need to know before your next piercing.

Rowan believes in piercing for ALL by licensed nurses. Their nurses are trained to provide safe, fun, and celebratory piercing experiences to guests 2 months to 100+.

Overseen by a Medical Advisory Board, Rowan nurses are experts in the use of PPE and
maintaining sterility and have extensive experience in creating a stress-free environment,
whether you’re getting a needle piercing or a hand-pressurized device piercing.

What is a needle piercing?

Rowan’s needle piercing is performed with a single-use hollow bore sterilized needle. Needle piercing can be implemented anywhere on the ear and is recommended for unique piercing placements. The piercing jewelry utilizes flat backs specifically designed for optimal comfort and healing.

Lobe needle piercing can be done on children 5 years and older. However, for the safety of the child, they must be able to sit still and follow directions. If a nurse feels that needle piercing is not the safest option for the minor, device piercings will be offered.

At Rowan’s Short Pump Town Center location, cartilage piercing can be offered to children 12 years of age or older with permission by a legal guardian.

What is a hand-pressurized device piercing?

Rowan’s hand-pressurized device uses the pressure and complete control of the nurse’s hand to safely guide, place, and pierce. This instrument holds a sterilized single-use cartridge containing the starter stud earrings that pierce the ear. Unlike piercing guns, which use spring-loaded mechanisms to forcefully pierce, a hand-pressurized instrument allows for gentle and direct control with each and every piercing.

If your child gets too nervous to pierce the second ear after the first, don’t worry! While this is
less common, it can happen with younger clients.

With preplanning, Rowan is able to pierce both ears simultaneously. If this is your preference, contact Rowan’s Short Pump Town Center studio prior to scheduling your appointment to ask what days and times may be available.

Does it hurt?

Piercing is best described as a “pinch” with discomfort that lasts for a few seconds, followed by a dull ache and warmth in the area. The dull pain can last for several hours to days; however, with proper care, the discomfort should diminish with each passing day.

It’s important to note that Rowan’s research has found no significant difference between the pain felt from a piercing by needle vs a piercing by their hand pressurized device.

Why does earring material matter?

Many people don’t realize that the material of the earring you get pierced with and wear for the first year post-piercing is equally important to the healing process. Allergies to metals including Nickel, Brass, and Zinc are common and can make you more susceptible to irritation (including itchy rashes and flaky skin). That’s why Rowan uses only the safest materials: pre-sterilized 14K gold, stainless steel, and titanium earrings.

How do I take care of my piercing?

At Rowan, aftercare is never an afterthought. After your piercing, your nurse will provide you with specific instructions based on your piercing placement and type. Here are a couple of general rules of thumb to keep your piercing healing well:

  1. Always wash your hands before touching your piercing, and try to touch it as little as
    possible
  2. Clean the piercing site 2-3 times per day with Rowan’s Advanced Aftercare Solution.
  3. Leave space between the back of the ear and the earring back to allow the piercing
    plenty of room to breathe

What else do I need to know?

Now that we’ve covered the basics, for any other questions, you can visit Rowan’s blog, our
Short Pump studio, or email our Nurse Helpline at nursehelpline@heyrowan.com.
